Mamoon Miyan and His Wife
Mamoon Miyan’s wife has a habit of constantly taking up new hobbies—sometimes it’s sewing, sometimes gardening, reading books, or rearranging the furniture at home. Mamoon Miyan, however, has one common complaint about all these pursuits: they disrupt his peace and quiet.
One day, his wife announced that she was going to start exercising at home.
Mamoon Miyan looked up from his newspaper.
"What new hobby have you taken up now?"
His wife replied, "The doctor says exercise is essential for one's health."
Mamoon Miyan remarked, "The doctor also says one should go to bed on time. Have you ever followed that piece of advice?"
Smiling, his wife said, "You worry about yourself; I am looking after my own health."
The next morning, she began her exercises in the room—moving her arms up, down, to the right, and to the left.
Mamoon Miyan watched her for a while, then asked:
"What are you doing?"
"Exercising."
"And what will that achieve?"
"It will improve my health."
Mamoon Miyan shook his head and suggested, "Take my advice—come for a walk with me every morning."
"When do you ever go for a walk?" his wife asked.
"I do it mentally every single day," he replied.
"Mental exercise doesn't reduce physical fat," she pointed out.
Mamoon Miyan shot back, "But it certainly reduces the fat in one's brain!"
A few days later, his wife began being careful about their diet. Soon, vegetables and salads started appearing on Mamoon Miyan's plate as well. One day, upon seeing the plate, he asked:
"What is this?"
His wife replied, "Salad."
"And the main dish?"
"I didn't make any today."
Mamoon Miyan remarked with a sigh, "Democracy has come to an end in this house."
"Why?" his wife asked.
He replied, "Food is being prepared against my wishes."
His wife countered, "If it were up to you, we’d be having kebabs, nihari, and parathas every single day."
Mamoon Miyan responded with great seriousness:
"And what’s wrong with that? After all, someone in this house ought to stay healthy!"
His wife placed the salad in front of him.
Mamoon Miyan picked up a leaf, put it in his mouth, and said:
"Looking at this exercise and diet of yours, I’ve come to realize one thing."
"What?" his wife asked.
"To stay healthy, a person shouldn't get married."
His wife smiled and replied:
"And to stay healthy, a wife shouldn't listen to her husband."
Mamoon Miyan immediately picked up the newspaper. Sometimes, silence is the wisest course of action.
